ETHIOPIAN WATER OPAL 7

This listing is for (1) raw Ethiopian water opal, the exact piece pictured here.

Size (approximate): 14.9g, 1.1" at the widest point. 

This is beautiful quality Ethiopian opal with excellent play-of-color (flash) that exhibits an array of colors. This particular specimen has a more opaque phantom beneath the clear layer (as can be seen in some of the photos).

Please read: These are hydrophanous (water) opals and must be stored in water to preserve their appearance and integrity, and to prevent discoloration and crazing. They will be shipped wet (with a glass jar like the one pictured) to prevent too much drying during transit, but I am not responsible for any future damage caused by improper storage techniques. These were photographed in direct natural sunlight to exhibit their color - so they may appear different under different lighting.

Ethiopian Opal

Mineralogy

Unlike Australian Opal, Ethiopian Opal is hydrophane - which means they are porous and absorb water. Immersion in water results in a translucent opal (hence their “jelly” appearance) with gorgeous play of color (or “fire”). These beauties need to be kept moist/in water to avoid loss of color and crazing/damage.
