Carnelian (also sometimes spelled cornelian) is the red version of the silica mineral chalcedony. It gets its color from iron oxide inclusions and can vary from pale orange/beige to a very intense dark almost-black red. Virtually all carnelian on the market is treated to enhance its natural colors.
